Two years ago Extell Development filed demolition plans for a host of buildings in Midtown’s Diamond District, which led many in the real estate industry to speculate whether the developer was planning a massive new hotel project near Fifth Avenue.
The demolition plans, which covered 10 different buildings, were approved in the summer of 2016, but Extell never officially commented on the development, and all the buildings are still in place.
However, adding to this growing mystery are a new pair of demolition plans. On January 26, Extell filed demolition plans for the two-story structure at 25 West 47th Street, and a four-story structure right behind it on West 48th Street at 30 West 48th Street.
Both these buildings are on the opposite side from the 10 buildings Extell planned to demolish in 2016; those buildings are located at 2 West 47th Street, 10 West 47th Street, 3-13 West 46th Street, and 562 and 564 Fifth Avenue.
So what exactly is going on over here? We’ve reached out to Extell to comment on this development, and will update this story as we learn more.
