For a little over a year, we had largely unobstructed views of Grand Central Terminal’s western facade, views most New Yorkers had never seen before. Now, those views are lost again as construction on the office supertall, One Vanderbilt, makes progress.
New construction site photos by NyConstructionPhoto reveal that the western facade of the terminal, while walking east from Madison Avenue, is obscured once again. But fret not, the views won’t be completely lost when construction wraps on the 1,401-foot skyscraper.
The architect on the project, Kohn Pedersen Fox, wanted to ensure that some views remain, and hence the buildings’s lobbies and atriums will rise to 105 feet, and be clad in glass for additional views of the terminal, according to the New York Times. Additionally, the building will have a 10-foot setback from the corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, for uobstructed views.
The SL Green-developed tower has risen up a few more stories since we last checked in on the construction site in November. Construction is scheduled for completion sometime in 2020.
