Beginning Saturday, January 5, the PATH train’s World Trade Center Station will be closed on weekends to carry out repairs to tunnels and equipment, caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Construction work is set to take place through December 2020, meaning that the station will be closed for virtually all of 2019 and 2020 (or 45 weekends each year, to be specific), with the exception of major holiday weekends. During repairs, service to World Trade Center will terminate at the Exchange Place Station on Saturdays at 12:01 a.m., beginning January 5, and reopening at 5 a.m. on Mondays after each weekend.

Per Port Authority, Hurricane Sandy caused major flooding that destroyed some vital signal and switch systems and at the Word Trade Center site, corrosive salt water has ruined much of the underground electrical and mechanical systems. Repair work will replace PATH tracks, third rails, electrical, signal, and communication infrastructure in tunnels located below the Hudson River.

PATH began weekend closures and service changes in 2014 but the Authority must now enact the two years of weekend closures to meet federal deadlines.

“We understand the loss of the WTC PATH station on weekends will cause hardship and inconvenience for many of our customers, but these repairs are vitally important to our continuing effort to overcome the worst storm we’ve experienced here in our lifetimes,” said PATH General Manager and Director Michael Marino.

Free transfers to and from Brookfield Place Ferry Terminal will be provided to customers at the Harborside Ferry Landing in Jersey City every Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. when the ferry is not in operation, the Journal Square-33rd Street line via Hoboken will provide additional service.

Head over to the Port Authority’s website, or download the RidePATH app for updated train and ferry updates.
