New, 18 comments

Which project gets your vote?

Every year, Curbed NY’s editors look back at the year that was—the priciest sales, the biggest celebrity moves, the most ridiculous amenities, you get the idea—during the Curbed Awards, which run for most of December.

But before we kick off the latest edition in the next few weeks, we want to hear from you—specifically on the best building to debut in New York City in 2018.

For this, we looked at developments that were completed this year, and narrowed the pool down to four buildings (it wasn’t exactly a robust year for new architecture in NYC). Cast your vote below, and if we’ve left a project off, take to the comments.

3 World Trade Center has been in the works for more than a decade, and in 2018, the skyscraper—which, at 1,079 feet tall, is New York City’s fifth-tallest building—finally debuted. Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners, the massive, glass-clad tower is one of the final pieces of the larger WTC site to open.

Six years after Hurricane Sandy flooded the New York Aquarium, the institution finally debuted its “Ocean Wonders: Sharks!” pavilion, which brings contemporary design to the Coney Island Boardwalk. The whole thing takes its inspiration from the ocean that’s right at its door, from the kinetic nature of its 1,100-foot “shimmer wall,” created from tens of thousands of aluminum pieces. to the shape of the pavilion, which resembles a nautilus shell.

The old mall at South Street Seaport’s Pier 17 is long gone, and has been replaced by a glass-enclosed jewel box, designed by SHoP Architects, which opened over the summer.
