Plans to redevelop Crown Heights’s Bedford Union Armory into rentals and a recreation center are officially moving forward. YIMBY first reported that the city had filed plans to bring a 15-story residential building to 1579 Bedford Avenue. The plans list Marvel Architects as the applicant of record, and the city’s Economic Development Corporation as the owner.

The rentals will rise in a redeveloped portion of the existing armory. Previously, plans called for 330 rentals and 60 condos, but after continued pushback from Crown Heights residents, the city and the developer relented and decided to make the project an entirely rental development.

Now, the redeveloped armory will have 400 apartments, of which 250 units will be affordable rentals and open to those making between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income. Overall, 60 percent of residences will be affordable and rest will be market-rate.

The overall redevelopment project will also be comprised of an affordable recreational center with a swimming pool, basketball courts, and space for other sports; and affordable office space. There’s no word yet on when this BFC Partners-developed project will wrap construction.
