Governors Island is shaping up to be the city’s go-to chill spot this summer. After announcing plans for late-night park hours every Friday from May 25 to September 14, the Trust for Governors Island has now announced that this year will also include the island will welcome its very first outdoor film series.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center has partnered with the Trust to curate a selection of films that fit the series’ “Escape in New York” theme. Beginning on Friday, June 8, there will be four free screenings, each taking place on the second Friday of every month between June and September.
“Thanks to expanded late summer Fridays and some of the best skyline views, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our city than bringing New Yorkers together under the stars for a New York City-themed film series,” said President and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island, Michael Samuelian.
The film series will kick off with a screening of the 1981 thriller Escape from New York, and will be followed by Desperately Seeking Susan on July 13, Ghostbusters on August 10, and The Last Dragon on September 14. Each screening will be paired with an independent short film by a local New York filmmaker,

In addition to late Fridays and outdoor movies, park visitors can enjoy a camping experience on the island.
