In case outdoor camping, late Friday night park hours, and outdoor movies weren’t enough reasons to head to Governors Island this summer, the Trust for Governors Island is rolling out yet another fun activity to look forward to.

A new skating rink will make its debut along the island’s Western shore. Mel’s Rink Governors Island, as it’s been named, is an 8,000-square-foot outdoor ice skating rink being built in partnership with Maryland-based nonprofit organization,Mel’s Rink Foundation, and will be the first outdoor skating rink to touch down on Governors Island. The rink is being designed from synthetic material and will rely on synthetic ice that mimics the properties of real ice.

The rink will be situated near Governor Island’s Castle Williams will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. On late Fridays, the rink will stay open until 9 p.m. You’ll be able to catch free skating every weekday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Skate rentals will cost $20 for adults and $15 for children. It officially opens on Saturday, May 26.
