Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner, and like so many holidays, this one is celebrated with parades throughout New York City. You’ll notice we said parades, plural—there isn’t one dedicated event in Manhattan, but a bunch that are located in various parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.
Two of these are especially noteworthy: In Brooklyn, the Kings County Memorial Day Parade has been going strong for 152 years, with current and former members of the armed forces coming together to commemorate those who’ve given their lives in service. And in Queens, the Littleneck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade—a neighborhood tradition since 1927—lays claim, allegedly, to being the largest parade in the nation.
But those aren’t the only spots where people will honor fallen soldiers this weekend: read on for more information on parades—including street closures—in the Rockaways, Maspeth, Staten Island, and more.
