Now’s your chance to own one of Brooklyn’s most interesting homes: The quirky house at 2 Monitor Street in Williamsburg—aka the shipping container house—is now on the market, asking $5.5 million.
The home, which was designed by Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano of the architecture firm LOT-EK, is made up of 21 shipping containers, which were sliced, diced, and stacked to create a house with three terraces. The owners of the home, Brooklyn restaurateur Joe Carroll (of Fette Sau and St. Anselm fame) and his wife, Kim, commissioned the house back in 2012, and it was completed in 2016.
To fit the home onto the lot—which measures 25 feet wide by 100 feet long—the architects placed three containers side-by-side, and cut into them at an angle so that they would neatly stack together. That led to the home’s unusual slanted shape, which is visible from the street, as well as the placement of terraces on every one of its three levels. Massive glass windows on both the front and back of the home bring light into the space. (You can see a video of the house being assembled here.)

The house has three levels, plus a cellar; that area is home to a garage, a den, and one small bedroom. The first level is where the common area is situated, with an open kitchen and dining area at the back of the house, and a living/media room at the front. A terrace and driveway are located just off of the kitchen.
The bedrooms are located on the second and third floors, with the entire top floor given over to a master suite with its own bathroom, terrace, and huge walk-in closet.
The unique home at 2 Monitor Street is listed with Compass’s Jon Capobianco and Quinn Ferree for $5.5 million.
