Apartment #50/51 put the Upper West Side's normally press-shy Dakota in the spotlight early last year. Building resident Alphonse "Buddy" Fletcher Jr. filed a lawsuit against the co-op board when the board turned down his $5.7 million bid for the apartment, a fifth-floor 2BR that had belonged to the late Ruth Proskauer Smith. Following Fletcher's failed bid, Smith's unit?and a potential $19.5 million combo with one of its neighbors?languished unsold until last month. As we speculated, Smith's place has found a buyer. Public record shows that one Howard Greils paid $5.45 million for the apartment, a price that, at less than Fletcher's original offer, might not totally quiet the controversy.
