The definitive guide to ‘Home Alone 2’ filming locations in NYC

The Christmas classic was filmed all over Manhattan

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is one of those sequels that very well might live up to, or even surpass, its progenitor. Why? Instead of taking place in the suburbs of Chicago, the beloved 1992 classic is a romp around the holiday season's most festive city: New York.

In the John Hughes-Chris Columbus collaboration, Macaulay Culkin returns as maligned youngest child Kevin McCallister, separated from his family once again during what's supposed to be the happiest time of the year. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are back as bad guys Harry and Marv, recently escaped from prison and out to steal some cash from a toy store on Christmas—before they run into Kevin in the Big Apple and decide to seek revenge from the precocious kid's prior-year high jinks instead.

From the Plaza and Central Park to the World Trade Center and an under-renovation townhouse, what follows is the ultimate geographic guide to where Home Alone 2 is set across New York City. And hey: Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.

Relive the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in the 1980s

See festive, quirky images of the NYC Halloween parade from Scott Laperruque’s 2013 book, Treaters

This piece was originally published on October 29, 2014; it has been updated.

Scott Laperruque lived on West 10th Street from 1982 to 1986——and every October during those years, the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade marched right past his second-story windows.

Naturally, he was inclined to pick up his camera and shoot black-and-white images of the raucous spectacle, which was then in its infancy. The annual fest of elaborate costumes and unabashed pride started in 1974 as a relatively small affair, with just 160 participants; its growth and popularity meant that by 1986, it was "too big for the small side streets of the Village and was moved to the larger avenue."

Laperruque compiled 113 of his images in his 2013 book, Treaters, and shared 13 with Curbed. "Photographically it is difficult because it is at night. Fast-moving, tight spaces," he recalls. "I'd like to think that the people I photographed, even decades later, still treat Halloween like it's the greatest day of the year."

This year’s Halloween parade happens tomorrow, October 31, at 7 p.m.—here’s everything you need to know about that.

Artist Sculpts Incredible Sandcastles on New York's Beaches

This doesn't look like child's play, but Calvin Seibert has been molding structures out of sand since he was a kid messing around in Vail's dusty construction sites. Most recently profiled by City Lab, he's a Brooklyn artist who has a meticulous strategy for bringing curved, stacked, angled, and otherwise architecturally intricate structures to life on the sand of New York City's beaches. Whether it's Fort Tilden, Coney Island, or Rockaway, Seibert concocts a complex saltwater-sand mixture before sculpting it with "carefully selected tools: plastic spackling blades and trowels made specially of Plexiglas (metal rusts, after all)."

On his Flickr page, which contains one mindboggling image after another, he writes:

Building "sandcastles" is a bit of a test. Nature will always be against you and time is always running out. Having to think fast and to bring it all together in the end is what I like about it. ... In my mind they are always mash-ups of influences and ideas. I see a castle, a fishing village, a modernist sculpture, a stage set for the Oscars all at once.

In the summer, he works on his sandcastle complexes up to five days a week and 10 hours a day. The rest of the year, he focuses on more "traditional" art (sculptures from discarded cardboard) that goes in galleries.

He doesn't even mind when waves sweep his masterpieces away—or even when kids jump on them.

As Seibert told CityLab, "A sandcastle is ephemeral. There is a thing on the horizon that's going to destroy it. That's what makes it powerful and interesting."

Some ones from before this summer:

Envisioning a Smaller, Garden-Saving Expansion for the Frick

Just over a year ago, the Frick Collection unveiled renderings of its proposed expansion, which would've added gallery space, offices, a conservation lab, an auditorium, educational facilities, and a rooftop terrace. A firestorm of controversy subsequently erupted, with critics lambasting the plan ("banal and inelegant," anyone?)—in part because it would eliminate a beloved garden designed by British landscape architect Russell Page. All the backlash promoted the storied Frick to nix the expansion and go back to the drawing board. They've yet to come up with a revised proposal, but Unite to Save the Frick has. First detailed in the Architect's Newspaper, the interest group tapped architect David Helpern to design a smaller, more conservative addition that would add some new features but also save Page's garden. Have a look.

Peek Inside an Almost Complete Bank-to-Condo Conversion

Three years ago, the owner of the 100-year-old bank building on Montague and Pierrepont Streets in Brooklyn Heights decided it would be a grand idea to turn the statuesque structure into condos. The Stahl Organization's transformation of the Brooklyn Trust Company building into 12 fancy condos is almost complete, and Brownstoner has the first look inside. The apartments, which are all priced in the $3 million range, have thus far only been illustrated by drawings. They're very nice drawings, to be sure, but now we're seeing under-construction glimpses of a top-floor apartment with pitched-roof ceilings, as well as a kitchen and a bathroom.

Tower of Askew Stacked Blocks Offers More Glimpses Inside

The 40-story building that Euro Properties is putting up on East 59th Street is raring to take shape, now that the low-rises that once occupied the parcel between Park and Lexington avenues are reduced to rubble. 6sqft photographed the construction site, unearthed two new interior renderings, and noticed that a teaser site is now live. It has both English and Chinese versions, which makes sense given that Euro Properties is a Hong Kong-based firm—and that Chinese investment in NYC real estate is all the rage these days. Soo Chan designed a facade that contains four chunks of 10 floors each, set askew from each other and totaling 500 feet tall; the ceilings will range from 10 to 20 feet tall in the 29 apartments. Expect sales to launch this fall, and the building to be ready for occupancy in 2017.

As per 6sqft:

Above, 70,000 square feet is dedicated to residential use with apartments averaging 2,000 square feet in size and ceiling heights averaging more than 12 feet. Floors 6-31 will be single, full-floor residences, while floors 32-38 will feature two duplexes and a trophy 5,000-square-foot triplex. ... [O]ne-bedroom homes will start at $2.8 million, two-bedrooms at $3.6 million, the two 2,989-square-foot duplexes for $15.5 million and $16.5 million, and the triplex penthouse at $30 million. The lobby:

Two interior apartment renderings (UPDATE: the development team notes that these are no longer accurate. For our purposes, they give a sense of the interiors, but just keep that in mind):

Picture a millionaire marketing entrepreneur who spent $50,000 for a two-week rental in the Hamptons while very explicitly and publicly proclaiming that it was because she was searching for a husband. Would that person live in a subtle, understated place? Of course not. Meet Cheryl Mercuris, who last lived in a glossy Time Warner duplex that last asked $35 million before it was taken off the market. The Post reports she's now selling a $17.99 million condo at the Aldyn, a schmancy amenity-filled building along the Hudson River.

The unfurnished duplex with impressive views sprawls over 6,750 square feet with a 1,730 square foot wraparound terrace. It may be an enormous white-and-glassy box with seven bedrooms, but it's designed by Roman and Williams, who are pretty great. Mapping the Rent-Stabilized Apartments NYC's Lost Since 2007

Don't let a historic rent freeze fool you: the city's history with rent stabilization is fraught, complex, and not always supportive. One common complaint—that the de Blasio administration is trying to fix—is that de-stabilization is all too easy. Basically, a landlord can deregulate an apartment when tenants' rent and income reach certain thresholds; for the former, it's $2,500, and for the latter, it's $200,000. As New York City rents hit new highs, it's obviously in landlords' interests to charge market-rate rents and reap the profits. But these figures aren't tracked, as Gothamist explains, and so a man named John Kraus has spearheaded the creation of a rainbow-colored interactive map showing where across New York City apartments were de-stabilized between 2007 and 2014. He and his team used tax bills as a basis for the data, which is open-source.

According to Gothamist's analysis, and a closer examination of the map, the Upper East Side and the East Village-Lower East Side swath are two areas deregulation has hit the hardest. The opposite is a green-hued place like Stuy Town, where apartments were re-regulated in 2009.

Those tell-tale red, orange, and yellow dots, which signify the loss of rent-stabilized apartments "also loom over downtown Brooklyn out to Park Slope and Crown Heights; Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick; and the Astoria-Long Island City area. Which neighborhoods are likely to be next?" Head over to Gothamist for a full explanation of the map and their projections for the future.
· Interactive Map Shows NYC's Disappearing Rent-Stabilized Apartments [Gothamist]
· All Rent Regulation and Rent Stabilization coverage [Curbed]
