Here Now, Mapping All of 57th Street's Towers in Progress

View as Map

The owners of older, not-so-luxury buildings along 57th Street are starting to renovate their properties in preparation for the influx of richer folk who will come to One57, the Park Hyatt, the Willow Hotel, and other new buildings going up on the street. The Post discusses one of those renovations, to 57 West 57th Street, today, and it got us thinking of all of the new projects coming to 57th Street. So we put 'em on one big map, for a new feature we're calling Microhood Maps. (We stretched the microhood to East 57th Street for the sake of completeness.) Have another microhood where we should map redevelopment? Let us know.

This Extell-developed tower already has billionaire buyers in contract and a penthouse sold for more than $90 million. There will also be a Park Hyatt hotel within the building.

The owners of this building have been sprucing up the offices and retail space as new buildings start to fill the block, the Post explains.

A 50-story mixed-use tower, also from developer Extell, is in the works for this site. The building will be home to a seven-story Nordstrom opening in 2018.

Roman and Williams' DARKTOWER hotel is in progress here. The 30-story building, which is actually called the Willow Hotel (we like the other name better), is supposed to open in 2013.

a skinny 51-story tower here designed by Cetra/Ruddy. There will be 28 units, including a quadraplex.

Despite some neighborhood ambivalence, Bjarke Ingels' magic pyramid/PB&J sandwich is getting built at the far end of West 57th Street. It will have recycled water in the toilets and will pipe in outside air. We expect nothing less from Ingels, of course.

The Whole Foods here is already open, and the rest of the $500 mixed-use development is slowly following. The project will have two schools and 350 residential units (at last check, a mix of rentals and condos).

Starchitect Rafael Vinoly designed this building, which will eventually be the tallest in the city. The 8,255-square-foot penthouse will ask $85 million.

201 East 57th Street

The plan for this site (once known as a neighborhood survivor) is a glassy, boxy thing designed by TPG Architecture. Part of the building will go to TD Bank, and the rest, probably, to design and furniture showrooms.
