There are hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms in New York City, making the decision of where to stay (or where to tell out-of-town guests to stay) all the more difficult. But if you're looking for the newest rooms out there, then consider these nine hotels, all of which are receiving upgrades this year. Some are revamps of iconic spaces (hello, Four Seasons) while others will bring smaller or more outdated hotels into the 21st century.

9 New York Hotels Undergoing Major Transformations This Year
Both iconic hotels and boutique lodgings will get revamps this year

The Beekman
After three years of renovations, one of Manhattan’s original skyscrapers will reopen this July as a shiny new Thompson Hotel. The Beekman, a former office building known as Temple Court, was originally built in 1883; in its new iteration, it will have 287 rooms and suites designed by Martin Brudnizki, along with luxury condos and restaurants from celeb restaurateurs Keith McNally (Augustine) and Tom Colicchio (Fowler & Wells). But the real star will be the nine-story atrium topped by the building’s original pyramid skylight, which was sealed up for much of the 20th century.
Cosmopolitan Hotel Tribeca
The Cosmopolitan, part of NYC’s Triumph Hotels collection, is set to finish up its ongoing guest room renovation this month. It was built in the 19th century and claims to be one of the oldest hotels in New York City; but with its revap, it's opting for a lighter, more contemporary look from designer Silvia Zofio (who also did Triumph’s other hotels: Evelyn in Nomad and Edison in Times Square). A Serafina restaurant will also open next door to the hotel this spring and will provide room service for Cosmopolitan’s guests.
The Roxy Hotel

Hotel Chelsea
For nearly a decade, eager hoteliers have been attempting to transform the legendary bohemian enclave into a luxury hotel/apartment building, but it’s been tough going. The hotel’s most recent owners are reportedly in a battle with its current management and are looking for a new manager to take over. Meanwhile, about 80 tenants are still living in the building during the construction, which is now expected to be finished sometime in 2017.
The Redbury New York
The former Martha Washington Hotel is now known as The Redbury New York, so named for its new management team, an SBE brand that debuted in Hollywood five years ago. (There’s another Redbury in South Beach, Miami.) The hotel’s 265 guestrooms will soon undergo a floor-by-floor renovation, overseen by Redbury’s creative director Matthew Rolston (who's also an acclaimed rock photographer), who plans on drawing from the history of the nearby Tin Pan Alley for the new look. The lobby and the main area will also be refreshed but Marta, the Roman-inspired pizzeria from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, will remain untouched.
InterContinental New York Barclay
After closing down for 18 months for $180 million renovation, the Barclay just reopened with 704 brand new guest rooms, designed by Stonehill + Taylor with interiors by HOK. The result is Park Avenue style and luxury with minimal stuffiness. The hotel will also open The Gin Parlour, a throwback to Prohibition-era bars with 88 premium gins on the shelf. The new Barclay restaurant promises modern cuisine using sustainable ingredients, while a revamped Club InterContinental Lounge, open to guests who pay extra for access and to top-tier members of the IHG loyalty program, will be unveiled.
The Time New York
This flashy new Times Square hotel finished a comprehensive redesign of it 193 guest rooms by the Rockwell Group earlier this year. The rooms now feature leather upholstered beds, watercolor patterned rugs, and jewel box closets, all meant to appease the so-called "creative class" of travelers. The hotel has also pulled back the curtain on its 2,000-square-foot penthouse triplex, complete with a dressing room, marble bathroom, sauna, and a 500-square-foot outdoor patio. The hotel opened a Serafina restaurant and the LeGrande cocktail lounge in January as well.

Four Seasons Hotel New York
The tony hotel best known for its opulent, $50,000/night Ty Warner Penthouse Suite is currently in the midst of updating its 368 guest rooms, with work to be completed later this year. Last spring, the luxury chain debuted its new TY bar, designed by I.M. Pei (as the rest of the hotel is) with interiors by Pierre-Yves Rochon, serving 1930s-inspired cocktails and a special craft beer created by brewer Captain Lawrence. The brand will also open its new hotel in the Robert A.M. Stern-designed 30 Park Place this summer.
